A Lifetime of Complete Health Starts with Routine Dental Cleanings and Exams

Dental cleanings and exams are fundamental to your “complete health.” Led by Dr. Erela Katz Rappaport, the Complete Health Dentistry SoCal team in Poway, California, protects and restores the health of your oral cavity (teeth, gums, associated oral tissues, and structures) with professional cleanings and comprehensive exams, scheduled at least once every six months. Using the latest in dental technologies, including laser dental treatments, we can eliminate bacteria from the teeth and gums more efficiently than ever before. We also provide PerioProtect to patients looking for a customized, at-home treatment for gum disease that utilizes personalized trays which deliver medication deep into the periodontal pockets. Our on-site periodontist, Dr. Alassy, would love to share more details on this treatment with you and help with any necessary periodontal treatment.

Cleanings by our professional, skilled, and well-trained dental hygienists gently remove what cannot be removed with standard toothbrushes and home care tools and techniques. For instance, plaque buildup or hardened tartar is incredibly stubborn. We have the instruments and methods to remove it. So, this substance does not irritate or erode the soft and hard tissues–gums, teeth, and supporting bone. Furthermore, even those individuals with the “best” home care cannot possibly remove all the plaque constantly forming on the teeth and in the mouth. If plaque is allowed to linger, it promotes the development of harmful acids and the release of toxins that support the progression of dental decay and periodontal (gum) disease.

Additionally, the health of your teeth and gums plays a vital role in your systemic (whole-body) health. For example, medical researchers have found that patients with gum disease are at increased risk of developing respiratory infections, cognitive decline and dementia, and cardiovascular disease. Gum disease can also make it difficult for our patients with diabetes to keep their blood sugar levels in “check.” Also, some conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, can make you more susceptible to developing gum inflammation and infections. After all, diabetes can weaken the body’s white blood cells–the primary defense against oral bacterial infections.

Do Your Smile (and Body) Good!

Our hygienists use their skills and specialized tools to remove bacteria, surface stains, plaque, and tartar from the teeth and gum line during regular dental check-ups. They also measure the spaces (periodontal pockets) between the teeth and gums to determine the presence of gum disease and its severity or “stage.” If gum disease is detected and treated sufficiently early, its effects can be reversed. The health of the soft tissues, teeth, and supporting bone is restored.

Our dentist, Dr. Rappaport, will also use her considerable skill and experience to screen for conditions ranging from oral pre-cancers to cancerous lesions to TMJ disorders to tooth fractures, infections, or abscesses that may require immediate restorative therapies. Depending on what our hygienists and dentist determine during your periodontal screening, we may also recommend a “deep cleaning” alternative to the standard cleaning to eradicate gum disease. Scaling and root planning, as it’s called, may be complemented by Arestin antibiotics to fight the source of the infection–the bacteria!

Routine visits are also an excellent opportunity to discuss products and techniques to enhance oral care at home and apply preventive services. Professional preventive services are often easily integrated into these ongoing appointments. They may include dental sealants or coverings to protect grooved, decay-prone back teeth and custom oral appliances to protect teeth from damage caused by blows to the face during sports or chronic teeth grinding.
