Why treat when you can protect? Prevent threats to your oral and overall health with routine office visits

At Complete Health Dentistry SoCal, we promote proactive dental care. Conventionally, dentistry has been reactive; dental services have been built around treating, reacting, or responding to existing diseases and problems. Led by Dr. Erela Katz Rappaport, our team in Poway, California, is motivated by preventative dental services. Preventive dentistry is focused on maintaining the health of the mouth. In turn, the leading causes of tooth loss, dental decay, and periodontal (gum) disease are avoided.

Additionally, we support your complete or overall health and well-being by reducing or eliminating risk factors for conditions that can affect the quality of your life or that can threaten the health of your “system.” For instance, Dr. Rappaport gets to know patients and their habits, behaviors, and lifestyles. So, she can empathize with and work through challenges to one’s good oral and overall health, such as smoking. The use of tobacco products is the leading cause of oral pre-cancers and oral pharyngeal cancers.

Furthermore, by protecting the health of the gums and keeping the levels of bacteria in check, Dr. Rappaport is maintaining oral and systemic health. After all, advanced gum disease has been implicated in many severe, life-threatening conditions – from cardiovascular disease to respiratory infections. Also, severe oral infections can travel to other parts of the body through the bloodstream. When this happens, it can give rise to sepsis, a potentially deadly condition associated with tissue damage and organ failure.

Routine visits for lifelong health

Dental check-ups are a cornerstone of preventative dentistry. These check-ups are scheduled once every six months for otherwise healthy people who do not have risk factors for oral cancers, gum disease, or tooth decay. These routine visits generally include:

  • Professional cleanings by one of our skilled dental hygienists. We use specialized instruments to gently remove surface stains, bacteria, plaque, and stubborn tartar or calculus from the teeth and at the gum line.
  • Comprehensive oral exams, whereby Dr. Rappaport uses her visual acumen to detect potential problems. She will also feel for possible abnormalities and may even “listen” for signs of problems with the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). Disordered TMJs may make a clicking sound when you open or close your mouth.
  • Digital x-rays can be used to confirm or rule out problems. These safe, fast, and precise radiographs are used to “see” what Dr. Rappaport cannot detect with her eyes alone. The doctor and patient may immediately view images to enhance their understanding of the diagnosis and potential treatment options.
  • Oral cancer screenings are scheduled at least annually, but more follow-up appointments may be necessary for patients who smoke, chew tobacco, or otherwise use products that contain nicotine. Depending on what Dr. Rappaport finds during your screening, a biopsy or sample of the suspicious lesion or tissue may be taken. Early detection of these cancers before they have spread is associated with a high rate of successfully treating them.

These regular, ongoing appointments are also opportunities to stay on top of your evolving needs. Depending on what we find and discuss with you, we may recommend professional preventive services. These services could range from dental sealants to help back teeth stay decay-free to specialized oral appliances that help protect the teeth from damage caused by bruxism (teeth grinding) or injuries caused during sports.

Preventative care and services are the definition of “personalized.” They are essentially less invasive, more tissue-preserving, faster, and more affordable than services designed to treat symptoms and conditions already present.
